Since  early stage of the customers’ project, INNOV’IA  analyses, through the proven processes of the Technomix toolbox, the various technical constraints expressed or identified  in order to ensure a trusteed industrial transposition.

ROBUST MULTI-PROCESSES  MODELS TO ENSURE PERFORMANT INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION BY:

INNOV’IA  drying technologies consist in spraying a liquid product in very fine droplets in a closed chamber in contact with a current of hot air. This process allows the water to evaporate instantly while preserving the quality of the ingredient. The powder obtained is either fine (50-100µm) or micro-granulated 100-350µm. The final powder is found in a dry form with very low moisture and water activity in order to guarantee maximal stability and storage.  INNOV’IA  technologies allows to dry active ingredients in liquid or solid form whether it is hydrophilic or lipophilic, with optimal production yields and active ingredient concentrations guaranteed.

During the fluidized bed wet granulation process, a solution containing a binding agent is sprayed onto the powder particles. The liquid droplets come into contact with the particles, which is called the “wetting” step. The humidified particles will agglomerate among themselves by colliding thanks to the fluidization air which allows their individualization and to the sticky effect of the binder. There is formation of interparticle liquid bridges. By the action of the hot air supplied, the liquid bridges then undergo drying which evaporates the solvent, which allows them to solidify and thus ensures better cohesion of the granules produced. The repetition of these steps (fluidization, wetting, collisions, consolidation) allows their growth by coalescence. In the case of wet granulation in a fluidized bed, agglomerated particles in the “raspberry” or “onion” structure are obtained.

The advantages of a powder obtained by INODRY  and INNOV’IA wet granulation in a fluidized bed are:

  • Better homogeneity of the powder with a narrower particle size distribution
  • Controlled powder density
  • Improved flow characteristics
  • Better compressibility
  • Superior porosity facilitating better dissolution in liquid
  • Reduced rate of fine particles (<100 microns): obtaining “dust-free” forms (without dust)

INNOV’IA and its subsidiaries provide multi-technologies know-hows for implementing active ingredients encapsulation via multi-processes such as coating, prilling, dripping and emulsion.

Coating consists of spraying of an aqueous solution of polymer or of molten material onto particles of fluidized active principle (coater in a fluidized air bed; top-spray, bottom-spray or tangential-spray) or with stirring (drum / turbine coating machine). The particle size distribution of the coated product can be between 100 µm and 5 mm. The final product is in dried powder form with low moisture and water activity. The active ingredient which is initially in liquid or solid form is adsorbed on an inert carrier and the final concentration in active ingredient can be upto 900 mg/g. Innovia’s coating processes offer the benefits of controlled final particle size distribution and optimal coating layer with final high active ingredient concentration.

Prilling or spray-congealing consists of spraying of a molten material containing the active principle in cold air or at room temperature (solidification). The particle size distribution of the spray-congealed product can be between 50 and 500µm. The final product is in dried powder form with low moisture and water activity. The final concentration in the active ingredient can be upto 400 mg/g. Innovia’s prilling technologies offer the benefits of very high production yields and controlled final particle size distribution.

Dripping consist of droplet extrusion (single or multi-nozzle equipment, gravity only, centrifugal force, jet break, co-extrusion) of a solution of (bio)polymer containing the active principle in a gel bath or in cold air or at room temperature (solidification). The particle size distribution of the final product can be between 50µm and 7-8mm and the droplets can further be dried. The final concentration in the active ingredient can be upto 400 mg/g in moist form and upto 900mg/g in dried form. Innovia’s dripping processes offer the benefits of biocompatibility and low size dispersion.

Emulsion consists of formation of droplets containing the principle active by emulsion (o / w, w / o, double emulsions), then stabilization by coacervation, crosslinking, thermal gelation, solidification, interfacial or in-situ polymerization, solvent evaporation. The particle size distribution of the final product can be between 1 to 500µm and it is in liquid form which can further be dried. The active ingredients are initially soluble in water and oil phases. The final concentration in the active ingredients can be upto 900mg/g in dried form. Innovia’s emulsion processes offer the benefits of very high concentration in active ingredients and low particle size diameter.
